Size:

Height: average 3 feet on all fours -- Weight: average 450 pounds for males ; females 33 % smaller

Physical Characteristics:

Smallest of the North American bears -- usually black with tan muzzle and white patch under throat -- claws are short and curved

Habitat:

Forest regions, swamps, dense bush land

Habits:

Solitary -- fast runner -- skilled tree climber -- sleeps deeply for most of the winter -- wanders far for food

Diet:

Plant life, small mammals
