Safety
Computer
time: privilege or right?
The use of the computer
or the internet is a privilege, not a right, which may be
revoked at any time for abusive conduct. Read the following
code of conduct. Each section has a star code, showing the
importance of the rule. One star (*) is less important while
five stars (*****) means that the rule is extremely
important.

Messages
ACRONYMS ***
When emailing, you can use
acronyms like LOL (Laugh out loud); however, keep in mind
that users might not understand them. Keep them to a
minimum.
CARBON COPY
***
Don't send a carbon copy of
your message to the rest of the world, unless you have
to.
DO NOT SHOUT
*****
Never write in capital letters
when corresponding online. Viewed as "shouting", it means
that you are yelling or calling for help.
EMOTIONS **
Use special characters to
label your emotion. To
<<<<highlight>>>> a point, use
special characters to emphasize certain words or phrases. Do
not use capital letters.
KEEP YOUR MESSAGES SHORT
*****
The most annoying is long
messages which contain entire quoted messages. When replying
to a message, only include the critical part of
it.
MAILBOX ****
Check your mailbox regularly
for messages.
PERSONAL INFORMATION
****
Don't post any information
that you don't want others to see. Be aware that anyone can
read your messages.
RESPONSIBILITY
*****
Everyone is responsible for
their own content. Always keep that in mind when you write
your message. Basically, do unto others as you'd have others
do unto you.
SMILEYS **
Although these little symbols
are becoming a fad, they annoy lots of users. They may seem
very cute at the beginning, but you need a dictionary to
understand all their different messages.
SPAM ***
Do not send email messages to
people you do not know.
SUBJECT HEADERS
*****
Use meaningful subject
headers. Assume that readers receive thousands of messages
daily and you want to trace easily your message.
WRITE YOUR ANSWERS UNDER
THE QUOTED MESSAGE ***
To my knowledge, we still read
from top to bottom, left to right. Therefore, include your
reply after the quoted message. This way, users can read the
quote and then your reply to it.
